Eight Fuel Economy Myths Debunked Myth #5 Should You Leave Your Car Running?

Myth #5 "Keeping Your Motor Running While Idling Saves Gas."

Conclusion: MYTH!

You have to make a quick stop at your friend’s house and will be in and out in minutes. It's better to leave the car running because it will use more gas to stop and restart the engine, right? Nope. Pure myth. Again, fuel-injected vehicles start very efficiently, so it’s better to turn off the engine if you'll be idling for more than 30 seconds. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea to shut off your engine when you stuck in traffic. That can be dangerous, contribute to your starter wearing out prematurely, and won't save you more than a few pennies in the long run. One notable exception are new hybrids that safely shut-off the engine automatically while stopped and switch to battery power.
